COVID-19 Variants and Our Detection Kit

Ever since the SARS-CoV-2 virus appeared in Wuhan in December 2019, it has wreaked havoc around the globe, with many countries going into lockdown as a result. Many countries were unprepared, as an infectious airborne disease of this magnitude has not affected the entire world in decades. However, as unprepared as they were, the newly discovered coronavirus was relatively easy to detect since it only had one specific gene sequence.

But as with any organism that replicates RNA, the SARS-CoV-2 virus mutated, resulting in genetic variations that make it hard for scientists and healthcare professionals to accurately and precisely detect the virus. Accordingly, the United States FDA published a warning about the potential dangers of detection kits producing false negative or false positive results in early 2021.

There are four major variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus: B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P.1, B.1.617. First one to be labeled a concerning variant by the WHO, B.1.1.7 originated in the United Kingdom in September of 2020 and is 50% more transmissible than the original SARS-CoV-2. B.1.351, or the South African variant, first was documented in May of 2020 appear to be more contagious and more stealthy than its predecessor. The P.1 variant, originating in Brazil, has mutations in its spike protein, making it more resistant to vaccines targeting the virus’s spike protein. B.1.617 is the most recent designated variant of concern. First detected in India in October 2020, B.1.617 has increases in transmissibility, virulence, and resistance compared to the SARS-CoV-2. Due to the differences in the genetic sequences of the aforementioned variations, many detection kits can have trouble producing accurate results.

However, even in situations where other detection kits fail, the KimForest SARS-CoV-2 Detection Kit prevails. The KimForest SARS-CoV-2 Detection Kit can not only accurately detect the original SARS-CoV-2 virus with high sensitivity and specificity, but it can also accurately detect the mentioned genetic variations, all within 100 minutes. The KimForest SARS-CoV-2 Detection Kit is designed to determine different virus strains across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, which would greatly reduce the possibility of a false negative result. The KimForest SARS-CoV-2 Detection Kit utilizes the updated sequences listed on the GISAID database, a trusted library of influenza and coronavirus data, to guarantee that it will detect the various virus variants.
